1. So… what can you really expect from a company that offers rates as low as 1 cent per minute? Is there a noticeable difference in quality?

Reasonable question. After all, “low cost” 10-10 dial around services charge 5 to 7 cents a minute, and up, and the major phone carriers charge as high as 35 cents a minute! (CLICK HERE to read about the rate increases).

The simple answer is yes, on a very small percentage of the calls, there is a small difference. For 99% of the calls you make, you will not notice any difference at all.

For the other 1%, the following issues may be involved:

  1. dropped calls and/or
  2. busy signals while trying to gain access to the network
(more frequently experienced in peak calling periods and if you are using toll-free access rather than local number access).

So what should you do if you do run into one of the problems listed above?

Simply hang up and try again. In most cases that is all you will have to do!

The real question is, is the difference worth paying so much more for? - i.e., up to $5.00 more for a 15 minute phone call? If your long distance bill is over $50 per month, you are saving money with every call!

9. How does it work?

Becoming a customer is simple, and you DO NOT have to switch your long distance carrier or your local carrier.

A. Register your phone number with CallDirtCheap.com:

  1. We use an ANI recognized service (Automatic Number Identification).

    a. This means that when you dial the toll free Local Access Number or the 800 Number given to you when you signed up, our system automatically recognizes the telephone number that you are calling from.

    b. For this reason, you MUST dial the local access number from the phone line that you signed up with.

B. Dial your local access number.

  1. Many of our customers find it helpful to program this number into the speed-dial on their phones.

    a. If you are not in one of our 526 metropolitan areas simply access our system through our toll free 800 number.

    b. Save it on your speed dial as a convenient option.

C. You will hear an operator say "Quick PIN Authorization Successful. Please enter the number you wish to call, followed by the # sign."

  1. Hint: If you don't hear the authorization message, double check to make sure that you are calling from the phone line that you subscribed to our service with. You must use that phone line, or the ANI (Automatic Number Identification) will not work.
  2. If you are sure you are using the correct phone line, please try again. As wonderful as these phone systems are, about 3% of the calls will not go through the first time and will have to be dialed again.

D. After you hear the authorization message, make your call by dialing: 1 + Area Code + Number, then hit the # key.

10. Why should I avoid "Voice over the Internet" companies?

Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have figured out how to send calls through the Internet for free and then charge you for services.

The problem is the quality of the call is greatly diminished. You know who these companies are by their poor quality:

  1. digital break-up,
  2. echoes & delays,
  3. static,
  4. dropped calls,
  5. howling,
  6. bleeding into other calls,

14. Is there such a thing as ‘unlimited flat rate’ where I can call for hours and hours and hours for one low flat rate?

  1. Any call that is initiated and/or terminated on a telephone company connection, as opposed to a internet based call initiated and/or terminated at a computer, must pay a charge to the phone company. Only web based calls can have an unlimited calling plan. The quality of those calls are not yet good enough for us to include them in our plan.
  2. Watch out for hidden fees that will be used to pay for those calls. Some members of such so called ’unlimited plans’ have received bills for hundreds of dollars without warning.
